Hope everyone is enjoying this fall! We have been working hard on our ongoing projects around our house. As I mentioned earlier this month, we are planning a major renovation and addition on a family farm house for my family. Polly and I have been busy looking at design plans making sure we get it right in addition to being affordable! It has been a fun, yet challenging project.
For Sweetest Day, Cameron and I planted 8 sunset maple trees and 1 buckeye tree (by special request) down our new driveway-Polly has been commenting (for the past 17 years) how she has always wanted a tree lined lane—Cameron, his dog Joe and I got busy on this project while the girls where gone to a fall softball tournament. Cameron is really proud of our accomplishments.

Alex has been playing in fall softball tournaments on the weekends this month and she’s having a good time. Last weekend, she was able to make progress towards marking items off her bucket list of things she wants to accomplish. She hit a Grand Slam in a tournament game and she has started to pitch in games. I wasn’t there for the big hit, but I knew something big had happened when she called me to tell me. I wish I had recorded the conversation-it was priceless!
We have been walking pigs for the North American next week too. The kids are excited; my mother in law is excited- all to go to Louisville. If you show pigs and haven’t been to this show I would recommend you go. It is a great time! We have seen some spectacular sunsets recently, here is one that we caught while walking pigs.
On Saturday 10/30/10, we will be hosting free show cattle in clinic at Campbellco in Cedarville, Ohio featuring Kirk Stierwalt. The weather forecast looks great for tomorrow, we will provide lunch (shoestring catering), lots of giveaways from Weaver Leather, EZall, and Honor Show Chow. There will also have a Cimarron Trailer on display. Stop by if you get a chance, Kirk does a great job and anyone from novice to expert can learn from him. We would love to see you tomorrow—If you have questions or need directions please give me a call 937-313-2973.

We have are having a Super September here in Ohio. The kids are back into the swing of school. I have had the opportunity to recently go to Alexandria, Louisiana & Lubbock, Texas for Honor Show Chow Clinics.
At home, everyone has been busy. I am grateful Cameron loves agriculture because he is a huge help to me—especially when I am out of town. He takes his dog, Joe, and they go and check the cattle every day. They do a good job!

Fall is Cameron’s favorite season of the year-mostly because of harvesting. He loves to ride in the combine and sometimes he gets lucky and he gets to drive it!

In other big projects at home, we have decided to move into one of our family’s farm houses. The house was built in the 1890’s by a great, great, great aunt and is structurally sound. We are just beginning renovation on interior of the existing structure and hopefully will be able to start construction on the addition before it freezes this fall. My wife keeps deciding that addition isn’t big enough, so it continues to grow.
In the new addition, we are planning for a new kitchen, family room, walk out basement—and the part that everyone is most excited about is a Mudroom, where we can all leave our smelly barn clothes/boots. We have lived in the same home since we were married and we outgrew the space several years ago, so everyone is very exciting about having more space and the upgrades-especially central air-conditioning! We have lots of decisions to make and it is challenging but fun. There are times when my wife wishes the DIY channel would come out and film “run my renovation” where the viewers vote and make decisions for the home owners. This project is very exciting, and we will keep you updated on our progress.

Since this picture was taken we have demolished the little barn on the left and trimmed the big tree back. We have taken out the fence all around the house and put in a new driveway.
We are also in our countdown to getting our pigs ready to show in early November at the North American Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.

We’re (Kyra) showing at the OK State Fair this week. We brought 2 prospects. Gonna be hot this week here in Oklahoma. Ky came and helped me set up. That was good. Kyra is coming tonight. She runs at 3 rodeos and shows here. It’s gonna be busy! We like to come a day early just to get the cattle settled in. This is the steers’ first outing so if we can get thru this with no wrecks, then mission accomplished! They always act better after they’ve been to a show. Well better go… good luck at the shows!
PS…I got my first poly bags of Fitter’s Edge this time. I like the new bags!!

HI EVERYONE!! Sorry haven’t blogged in a while …my bad. Well a lot has been going on here.
Kyra has been busy running barrels this summer at rodeos, barrel races and some year end events. She qualified and represented Oklahoma for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wy. That was fun and the weather was awesome compared to Oklahoma in the summer. She ended up 4th overall in the barrel race. One thing that she did that I’m really proud of is sing the National Anthem in front of about 5000 people. That was cool!!
Ky is getting settled into college at Redlands. He’s got a different apartment by himself so that is going to be handy for me on some of those early morning flights. Yea!! He’s been in and out this summer clipping and fitting for other people. He enjoys that as much as I do and that makes me proud. I am thankful that we survived the summer with him without any injuries like the last 2 years – there’s been knee surgery and a broken leg before, so we’re happy!!
Weaned some calves and we are feeding them Receiving Chow and the Grand 4-T fyer mix that Dr Myers has mixed. County fairs and state fairs are crancking up here so getting everyone ready for them. I’ve been traveling alot this summer. I was home 5 days in June, 6 days in July and 10 days in August. Got a busy fall coming!! Thanks to Juli for keeping everything going one way at home. I love what I do and look forward to each event or clinic. We had some great events along with our ambassadors and encourage you to come to one. I’m headed to GA to do a demo and judge.
We are really dry here and need rain badly. It will come sooner or later. Congratulations on all the state and county fair winners. Hard work does pay off !! Well better go…..good luck at the shows!! Kirk

This week was a week of new beginnings for my family. My daughter started High School, my son started Junior High and their Grandmother gets to enjoy the part of retirement she treasures most -sleeping in (she doesn’t have to get anyone on the later morning bus). I am pretty certain they were all excited for different reasons! Alex and Cameron both had summer homework due the first day of class—my wife and I didn’t ever recall having a homework assignment over the summer.
Our state fair went well. Cameron won 2 classes and had a Reserve crossbred division winner in the Junior Show barrow show. Alex had a class winner and a 3rd in the open barrow show. In the breeding gilt show they had a York class winner.
It was a good week at the Ohio State Fair. They made new fair friends, connected with existing friends—I told them some of my closest friends I met during the fair showing livestock while in 4-H when I was young-and they are still my very good friends today. Of course they looked at me funny when I tried to share my wisdom. I even reminded them if it wasn’t for 4-H, I wouldn’t have met their mother!
Last week I went to Alexandria, Louisiana for a show feed clinic. The clinic was held at LSU and we had a great crowd.

We just got home from spending the better of part of ten days at the Illinois State Fair. We got home just in time to put up 14 acres of hay that our neighbor had raked and baled for us. We even got ours and the neighbors hay all unloaded before the rain hit.
The Illinois State fair Southdown Show was large and very competitive. When all of the dust finally settled we made out real well, exhibiting both the Champion Ram and the Res. Champion Ewe. Those individuals helped lead our Champion Flock and, our first ever Premier Breeder at the Illinois State Fair. Thanks to everyone who helped make that possible. The Illinois State Fair Junior show went very well for Emily. The highlights would have to be exhibiting both the Champion Southdown Ram and Ewe in what was the largest breed show held at the State fair. She also exhibited the Res. Ch Southdown Market Lamb, as well as placing second with her cross, natural, and first with her AOB wethers.

July kept us hopping. We made our first trip to the All American Jr Show as a family and we had a BLAST! This year’s show was held on the campus of Michigan State University. The folks in Michigan and the Michigan Sheepbreeder’s Assoc. really rolled out the red carpet for everyone. Honor Show Chow-fed sheep really dominated that show of over 1800 head. Emily Shellhouse exhibited the Champion Hampshire Ram, Sarah Jane Sterret exhibited the Champion Hampshire Market Lamb, and Chaz Bullington exhibited the Champion Southdown ram just to name few. Long time HSC feeder Austin Jim Bob Lewis won the Southdown Top Gun Award. My daughter won seven classes along with Res Champion Southdown ram and Res. Champion Southdown Market Lamb. She also won her showmanship class and team showmanship with Seth Michel. There were many more HSC fed winners at the All American than I remember, so if I missed one just let me know and I will add you to the list.
Emily kept us busy the remainder of July showing cattle and sheep at some of the local shows. She had a ball showing her heifer, she was at least Res. Breed Champion each time out and was Champion at her 4-H Fair. Thanks to Team Girlfriend for making that all work so well. Emily had great summer with both her breeding sheep and market lambs. She had Grand Lamb at every show in our area. Congrats to Buddy Haas, Brad Craig, Melissa Emma, Bryan Temple, Ben Temple, and Robert Lambert. They were all big winners in the sheep or cattle ring this summer and Fed HSC. Thanks for all your help.
I really enjoyed the summer clinics. The HSC VIP is always a terrific event. I finally learned how Taw Wayne Dunham got his name; it is a great story… If you’re reading this and have not been to the HSC VIP, contact your dealer and ask them how to get involved. The HSC Showmanship Clinic at the Midwest Stud ram sale was also a big success. Jeff Repasky of Northern Starr Livestock and I had great time working with Southdown Junior Ambassadors. Thanks to KGB, TWD, Randy Ames and Mr. Witte for helping make that event so successful. Thanks to the buyers that selected A&M Ranch Southdowns at the Midwest Stud Ram sale.
As you head back to school don’t forget to make entries for the fall and later shows. Keep in contact with your feed dealer to make sure they will have what you need in stock and fresh. G ood communication will keep a good relationship with your feed dealer and your teachers, and you need both to be successful in the showring and life. WOW! Is that deep or what?

It has been a while since my last blog, and a lot has happened in the last few months. The spring was outstanding with Tyler having Champion Hereford Steer in Houston and Reserve Overall British with his Shorthorn Heifer. Shortly after that was our steer and heifer sale in which we sold about 120 head and had excellent response with several winners this summer that came out of the sale.
We had some excellent clinics this spring in Poteet, Weatherford, Kennedy, and Giddings. Summer began with baseball season ending and swim team starting along with our Female Sale in June, the VIP, and the Texas State Hereford Show, which all took place in about 10 days. We had a real nice clinic at the state show in Amarillo with great attendance, and it even included air conditioning. The show had about 300 head in it and we were lucky enough to have Champion Polled Hereford Heifer and another division winner. The following week Tyler and I were to attend the National Jr Shorthorn Show but Tyler had to fly up by himself because I had to attend the funeral of a good friend of mine.
July started off with a trip to the Hereford Jr National in Indianapolis, which is a long way from Schulenburg, Texas. We had a great trip with the boys winning the 3 on 3 basketball tournement, the Prospect Steer Show, a division in the heifer show, a res division in the heifer show, res in the fitting contest and Tyler won his age division in Showmanship. I commend the American Hereford Association on a great event.
We had an outstanding turnout at the fitting demo sponsored by Honor Show Chow, and I would like to thank Mike Witte for his assistance. After 2 weeks at the Jr National I headed to California to judge the steer show at the state fair. The quality at the show was great and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. July ended with a trip to the state ag teachers convention in Galveston. The Honor Show Chow booth was very busy and I would like to commend Taw Wayne Dunham on his set up and hard work.
August has been very hot and humid but with the rains in July we have made quite a bit of hay. We are also preparing for calving season which will start the end of this month with about 100 calves due in the month of September alone. Good luck at the State Fairs!
