A lot has been happening around Bar A Cattle Co the last couple weeks. We have shipped a lot of cattle out since our production sale. This has given us more time to work on some other projects such as halter breaking Tyler’s calves, flushing cows and doing a lot of ranch repairs that we had not gotten to all winter.
Last week we finally got some rain. 10 inches in 6 hours is a little much, and we ended up losing 26 cows down the river that borders our ranch. We located many of the cows from an airplane and I am glad to say that we have 25 of them back home. Now we have a ton of fence to fix from the floods, but at least most of our cows our home.
Last Sunday we had a cattle clinic at the Doguet Brangus show heifer sale, and the turnout was excellent! See you next week.

Things have been very busy the last 2 weeks. March 17 through the 21st we were in Houston showing heifers, and we enjoyed a great time with our family and friends. My son won Grand Champion Polled Hereford and Res. Champion British in the overall. We also had 3 res. divisions in the shorthorns, red angus and AOB divisions. These were all heifers that we had sold.
On March 24, I helped with the fitting and showing clinic in Corpus Christi. We had an excellent turnout and the local Purina store was an excellent host. This past weekend we had our annual steer and heifer sale. We sold 118 head, and the support was outstanding. Thanks to all the buyers and good luck in the following year!

The last two weeks have consisted of washing and clipping calves for our phone bid sale on March 28th. We finished clipping all of the steers last week, and have made a pretty good dent in the heifer calves. We will sell about 130 calves on our annual sale. These calves are on a Grand 4-T-Fyer ration that has worked extremely well for us, and the calves are gaining and starting to bloom.
My son Tyler is taking his hereford heifer to Houston this week and we are excited to see how he does. We also have several nice Chi, Red Angus and Shorthorn heifers that will be going to Houston. See you next week!

The week of Feb 23rd involved revaccinating our recently weaned calves, clipping some customers’ cattle, trimming feet, attending the Rockets basketball game and judging a show.
Last week was very productive in terms of getting things done, but the highlight of the week was attending the Houston Rockets basketball game and watching them beat Lebron James’ team. We also had Res. Champion American Steer at the San Angelo Stock Show over the weekend with a calf that sold on our sale last year. Things are moving along for our sale and we will begin clipping the cattle in our upcoming sale this week.

The week of Feb 16th continued at a busy pace. We weaned about 150 calves on Monday and Tuesday for our show calf sale on March 28th. These calves are started on Purina Receiving Chow for 10 days, and then they go on our Grand 4-T Fyer ration until the sale. The calves look excellent.
On Wednesday I attended the steer show in San Antonio and visited a customer’s ranch to look at some calves that will be in our sale. The steer show continues through Friday, but I only had time to attend one day. We ended up with at least 5 steers in the sale, and my partner sold a bred heifer that raised the Champion Chi Steer. Two more sets of calves were picked up Thursday and Friday. Saturday we took a class of heifers to San Antonio for the College Judging Contest. We returned home Sunday just in time for little league basketball practice.

The week of Feb 9th was extremely busy but very rewarding. I attended the San Antonio Stock Show Jr. Heifer show. There were about 2,000 heifers, showing in 17 breeds. We had about 18 heifers at the show that we sold.
My son Tyler had the Champion Hereford Heifer and we sold the Reserve Champion Red Angus and the Reserve Champion Chianina. We had many class winners and division winners as well. The Breed Champions recieve a $10000 scholarship, and we were very excited that our son received one. The steer show is next week and we will be weaning this year’s sale calves as well.

We took our son Tyler to Ft. Worth last week with his steer. He got 2nd in class which was great! We had him on Fitter’s Edge and Power Fuel. This week is San Antonio Heifers and we will have about 15 head there.

The week of Jan 25th was a little slow due to the fact that I had the flu from Monday until Friday. My fever broke Friday and things got rolling after that. Over the weekend I clipped four steers for Fort Worth and 2 heifers for San Antonio. The cattle look excellent and I hope they fare well this next week.

Things kept moving as we returned home from Denver late on Jan. 19. I had 2 days to finish clipping the four heifers that were going to Ft. Worth Wednesday evening. Three of these heifers we sold and one belongs to my son Tyler. Although the weather didn’t cooperate with a high of 85 and a low of 30, the show was a success.
Keaton McConathy, a friend and customer, had the Grand Champion Red Angus heifer. This heavy bred female has been on Full Control for several months now. The rest of the heifers faired well with none standing less than second and they all were Purina fed. There were lots of questions from fellow exhibitors about Full Control and Power Fuel.

Clipped several heifers this past week that came off our 2008 sale. The exhibitors have done a great job with them and I wish them luck at the shows they will be attending the next few weeks.
I headed to Denver with my wife Becky on Friday. The weather in Denver was awesome, and the crowds of people attending were as well. I was helping Sullivan Farms from Iowa while visiting Denver, and it was a very successful trip. These cattle are all fed on the Grand 4-T-Fyer product, and the results have been excellent. In Denver, Sullivans had the Champion Shorthorn Heifer, Champion Shorthorn Plus Heifer, Champion Pen of 3 Bulls and Champion Pen of 5 Bulls. I will be headed to Fort Worth for the Junior Heifer Show this next week.
