Craig: Adding Pop!
|
| |
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012
Question: My daughters southdown lamb will show on 2/12. We actually have the rare problem of needing some more bloom as she has been under an intense exercise regimen. I upped her feed a week or so ago from 2 lbs to 2.5 lbs/day to try to stay out in front of this. She has gotten a little stale on me and needs some POP! How much Power fuel per day to get that needed bloom in 10 days with respect to the intense workout program.
Answer: Craig,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
You are right, I seldom hear of this problem, but once in a while someone needs help in this area.
8 oz per day High Octane Power Fuel should have the lamb back to where you want it in about 14 days.
For more pop or muscle shape, I suggest adding 8 oz per day of High Octane Champion Drive. You can feed more if the lamb needs it, up to 16 oz per day.
We also have a new product called High Octane Heavy Weight. It contains 70% fat and although it takes 3 to 4 days at times for ruminants to really eat it well, they do eventually eat it and everything it is on. For lambs you can mix with water and wet feed with it. It is water miscible.
You can also mix it into a paste and then add to the feed. This method has been the most successful in reducing the transition time. Mix 3 parts Heavy Weight and 1 part water, then add to the lamb feed in a bucket and mix together.
Heavy Weight works fast and lays down a great cover layer.

Cal: Improved Feed

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012
Question: I have heard that the 20% starter has been improved. What is improved about it? I just started feeding it Saturday.
Answer: Cal,
Thank you for your question and for choosing Honor Show Chow.
The new Showlamb Creep pellet has different more palatable protein sources and is made in a micro pellet ( 3/32″). The old Showlamb Starter Pellet was a 1/8″ pellet.

Kelly: Weight Loss

Monday, January 30th, 2012
Question: We have our first Jackpot in 10 days. We made the mistake of not weighing our lamb for two weeks and the lamb now weighs 152 lbs with too much finish and we want to show at 145 lbs. We were feeding 1 1/2 lbs of honor grower 18%, 6 oz champion drive, 6 oz fitter 35 and 4 oz power fuel per feeding. Two days ago I reduced the feed to 3/4 lb of the 18% grower, 4 oz champion drive and 4 oz of fitter 35. Should I not feed the champion drive to cut the finish off of him in 10 days?
Answer: Kelly,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
I suggest keeping Champion Drive in the lambs diet, but you will probably need 12 to 16 oz per day of High Octane Fitter 35.

Jody: Feed & Exercise Program

Monday, January 30th, 2012
Question: I need to build up my southdown lambs loins. One weighs 108 lbs, the other is 103 lbs. How and how much should I exercise them, and how much should I feed them?
Answer: Jody,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
There are many methods of exercise. I suggest exercising at least 3 times per week. Some successful feeders exercise on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday schedule allowing the lamb to rest and rebuild muscle on the off days.
I suggest feeding our HONOR Show Chow Showlamb Grower DX (the 18%) along with 4 oz each of High Octane Champion Drive and High Octane Fitter 35. If you Southdown lambs have carrying a little more condition than is needed, I suggest feeding Fitter 35 at 8 oz per day.

TJ: Finished Weight
|
| |
Monday, January 30th, 2012
Question: I currently have 2 wethers at 86 lbs. I am currently feeding 1 to 1 1/2 lbs of Impluse, 4 oz of Power Fuel, and 4 oz of Power Drive per day. Our final show is in March and I want to retain a finished weight of no more than 92 lbs. Last prospect show the goats did very good with the only comment that they needed more cover. Any suggestions?
Answer: TJ,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
High Octane Power Fuel is an energy supplement. It is used to improve the fat cover (finish) of show animals. If you need more finish on your goat, I suggest increasing Power Fuel to 6 or 8 oz per day.

Shar: Product Recommendation
|
| |
Friday, January 27th, 2012
Question: My son and I show 4H wethers and does (boar goats). We fed last years goats purina goat chow and it worked very well. My sons 4H wether weighs 97 pounds. The judge said he has got too much muscle. This year goats we would like to use something else. Would Honor Show Chow (implies goat R20) be okay for both wethers and does? And what type of supplement do you think would be good? Plus can they have hay too?
Answer: Shar,
Thank you for your question.
HONOR Show Chow Impulse Goat R20 will be fine for both wethers and does.
I suggest adding our High Octane Power Fuel at 4 oz per day to help with growth rate and cover. About 30 to 45 days from show, I suggest adding 8 oz per day of our High Octane Champion Drive to help add rack and top in the goats.

Jimmy: Feeding Depth Charge
|
| |
Monday, January 23rd, 2012
Question: If I decide to feed the high octane depth charge when should I start to feed that? At what weight and how much when feeding and I tried the fitter 35 last year and it did not work for me. I do not know if I feed it wrong or what happened but the champion drive mixed with power fuel seemed to be better.
Answer: Jimmy,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
For lambs, High Octane Depth Charge would probably only be fed when you are limiting feed intake to limit growth rate. Depth Charge is a filler that expands rapidly in the digestive tract and keeps the animal full. 2 to 4 oz per day is the normal feeding rate for that purpose.
High Octane Fitter 35 is designed to burn fat and help increase muscle. High Octane Champion Drive is designed help improve the rack and top without burning fat. High Octane Power Fuel is designed to add cover and help improve the overall health of the lamb.
Feeding Power Fuel and Champion Drive together would result in more top and more cover. Feeding Fitter 35 along (with the base feed) would result in the lamb burning fat, getting leaner, and should be more expressive up to a point. Once the lamb burns excess fat, it would take additional energy for it to keep working as any metabolic process takes energy (much like gas in a vehicle). So, if the energy from the lambs bodyfat has been pretty much exhausted, Fitter 35 is much less effective.

Janet: Conversion Rates
|
| |
Thursday, January 12th, 2012
Question: What is the conversion rate of show creep feed? What is the conversion rate of show grower? What is the nutrient difference between the creep feed and the grower? What is the conversion rate of 34% protein and corn and also the conversion rate of a by product mix in finishing lambs?
Answer: Janet,
Thank you for your question and your interest in HONOR Show Chow.
Conversion rates vary according to the products energy density. Energy fuels growth and the higher the energy content the more feed efficient the lamb will be.
For our Showlamb Creep pellet being fed to nursing lambs, the feed efficiency would be about 3 to 4 to 1 (3 to 4 lbs feed to 1 lb gain). This is an average from birth to weaning. Lambs are most feed efficient when they are born, and every day they get older they get a little less feed efficient.
So, lambs that are on Showlamb Grower will be less feed efficient because:
1. Older lambs
2. Lower energy content of Grower vs Creep pellet
3. Genetic potential for muscle (lean is more feed efficient to produce than fat)
Growing lambs from 75 to 125 lbs should have a feed conversion of about 4 – 5 to 1.

Ed: Holding
|
| |
Monday, January 9th, 2012
Question: My daughters lamb weighed in yesterday at 129 lbs. Our show is in 24 days. The ag teacher suggested trying to hold her close to that weight so she would be in the lightest class as she is smaller framed. She is in good shape but not too fat. We are feeding 2.5 lbs of 18% Grower daily. We are thinking of reducing that to 1.5 lbs daily. Should we add a supplement to the feed?
Answer: Ed,
Thank you for your question and for choosing Honor Show Chow.
To hold the lamb where its at without losing cover or muscle, I suggest feeding:
(total feed per day; divide onto two equal feedings):
HSC Showlamb Grower DX 1 lb
High Octane Champion Drive 1 lb

Rene: Feed Recommendation
|
| |
Monday, January 9th, 2012
Question: I have a ewe lamb that weighs 124 lbs and the county show is 60 days away. It is medium size frame and looks heavy. The weight limit is 140 lbs and I want to keep it in the middle medium wool class. Feeding 2 1/2 lbs of show chow and 8 oz of Champion Drive plus exercise 3 to 4 times a week (running and or treadmill). If I start her on the fitter 35, do I omit the champion drive and what rations do you recommend? I was told by a breeder that it has 4% fat and needs to be at 2%.
Answer: Rene,
Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.
High Octane Champion Drive is designed to help promote the rack of the lamb, and provide more muscle shape. High Octane Fitter 35 is designed to help increase overall muscle, but also help burn fat and harden muscle.
You can actually feed both at the same time. The feeding rate will depend upon how much help is needed, the weight of the lamb, and how many days there are remaining until show.
Also, I think the breeder intended to say that the lamb had about 0.40 inches of rib fat and he wanted it to be shown at 0.20 inches. That can be accomplished by using both Champion Drive and Fitter 35.
I suggest feeding:
(TOTAL FEED PER DAY; DIVIDE INTO TWO EQUAL FEEDINGS PER DAY):
HSC Showlamb Grower DX 2 lbs
High Octane Champion Drive 1/2 lb (8 oz)
High Octane Fitter 35 1 lb (16 oz)
For the Fitter 35, start at 8 oz per day, and in 4 to 5 days increase to 16 oz per day.
Also, remember to provide the lamb with a double handful of loose alfalfa hay per day.
Give this diet about 14 to 21 days, and re evaluate the lamb for finish and muscle. Lambs are different they are not all the same and some will need more and some less of the Fitter 35. If the lamb has not made significant process in 21 days, then you may need to increase the Fitter 35.
