Kim: Mineral Supplement

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Question: If I follow the “strategies for feeding modern show goats and modern show lambs” as directed, do I still need to provide an additional mineral block, salt, and/or hay?

Answer: Kim,

Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.

No, all the mineral and vitamin fortification lambs or goats need is in our feeds. We do however, suggest that you offer free choice salt to help encourage water intake.

Question: Which feed do you recommend for feeding show goats, Ntimidator or Xclamation? What are the advantages of using one over the other?

Answer: Kim,

Thank you for your question and interest in HONOR Show Chow Show Goat feeds.

All of our products are not available in every region of the country. In your area (Virginia), XClamation Goat is the product available.

XClamation is an excellent meat show goat product. It contains the protein sources and the energy to fuel growth and muscle development.

We also suggest our High Octane show supplements for fitting your goat project as you prepare for showday. High Octane Power Fuel is a 31% crude fat, extruded high energy supplement. Power Fuel will do a great job at adding cover, fueling faster growth, and helping improve the health status of your goat. The feeding rate is 4 to 8 ounces per day.

High Octane Champion Drive will do a great job at adding dimension to muscle, particularly the goats rack. The feeding rate is 8 ounces per day for a minimum of 30 days prior to show. (Longer is better).

High Octane Fitter 35 is a new topdress and does a great job at helping to burn fat and increase muscle. If your goat needs to be trimmed up going into show, feed 8 ounces per day for 21 days. If you need to increase muscle without burning fat, then feed 8 ounces of Fitter 35 and 4 to 6 ounces of Power Fuel together (along with XClamation).

Question: I have been showing cattle for the past few years very successfully while feeding Purina, but this is my first year of showing a goat. I was hoping you could tell me what is the best way to feed a goat. What feed product to use as well as the fat product? How much of each to feed as well as how much hay? My goat right now is weighing about 30 pounds and his terminal show is in the middle of August.

Answer: Cody,

Thank you for your question and for choosing HONOR Show Chow.

I suggest our XClamation show goat feed. This feed is already high energy and will do a great job on your goats. Feed about 3% of the goats bodyweight per day. There is no need to feed additional roughage as XClamation contains all needed roughage sources.

Water intake is very important in preventing urinary calculi in goats. You may need to change are offer fresh water 3 times per day to get the goat to drink adequately.

Our High Octane show supplements will also do a great job. Power Fuel is used to improve growth and body condition. Champion Drive is used to improve rack shape, and Fitter 35 is used to trim some fat and increase muscle.

Question: We have been raising goats for 6 years and just switched to exclamation from intimidator and our goats are craving salt could there be a link?

Answer: Brittney,

Thank you for your email and for choosing HONOR Show Chow show goat products.

I do not think there is a link as NTimidator and XClamation have the same amount of salt added to the formula.

If the salt was recently put out the goats will ingest more than is necessary. I am not sure what would be causing this spike in salt intake, but I do not believe the change in feed contributed to this.

Question: I have a glenn martin goat born in march 2009. He will be showing in the Houston livestock show on March 10th to be exact (if he stays at the weight I have planned) which will throw him at the top of the medium weight. What should I be feeding him? I have been told he has too much fat. So I got a trained track dog and got the track built, but nobody can tell me how many times to track him a week. But what additives should I mix in and that sort of thing?

Answer: Travis,

Thank you for your question and interest in HONOR Show Chow show goat products.

To help improve muscle, muscle tone, and help decrease body fat, I suggest feeding HONOR Show Chow XClamation Goat feed at about 2 lbs per day, and High Octane Champion Drive Topdress at 3/4 to 1 lbs per day while tracking your goat.

Paula: Muscle Gain

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Question: We have some goats that we will be showing 4 to 6 weeks. While they are at the weight that we want them, they need some muscle. We are maintaining their weight at this point, so how much Champion Drive should we be feeding them to increase muscle? We are currently feeding Intimidator, about 1 pound per day with hay. We did not know if we kept at the suggested amount on the bag since we were not feeding the 5 pounds per day as quoted.

Answer: Paula,

Thank you for your email and for choosing HONOR Show Chow show goat products.

The feeding rate for High Octane Champion Drive in goats is 8 ounces per day. You can feed more, up to 1 lbs per day.

NTimidator is a complete feed (all the roughage the goat needs is in the pellet). I say that because too much hay will cause the goat to have a belly or large middle. The Champion Drive will help with muscle development.

Question: What can you tell me about your products called noble goat and dairy palor?

Answer: Melissa,

Noble Goat is a name for the entire line of our production goat feeds. There are a number of Noble Goat products, including Noble Goat Grower 16, Noble goat Pre Con, Noble Goat Charge concentrate and a live of Noble Goat dairy goat products.

Two of our dairy goat products are Noble Goat Dairy Parlor 16% and Noble Goat Dairy Parlor 18%. These are pelleted feed supplements for lactation dairy goats that are fed along with hay. They are high energy feeds, with by-pass proteins and added yeast + performance organic trace minerals. the pelleted feed form eliminates sorting.

Rey: Feeding

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Question: In your opinion, what would be the best way to feed a show goat 5 to 10 days prior to show ring competition?

Answer: Rey,

Thank you for your email.

Feeding any animal 5 days prior to show depends upon what you are still trying to accomplish. For example, you might be still trying to add more top or muscle, or you might be wanting to increase cover. In those circumstances, you would need to feed the goat as you have been previously until it is at the point of your goal.

If the goat or any show animal is where you need them to be as far as muscle, cover, skin, hair, (wool) etc then I believe in not changing the diet much. We continue to feed right into show the way we had been previously.

However, just prior to and during the show it may be a good idea to use electrolytes to counter the stress of show preparation, transportation, and the actual showing of the animal.

Steve: Weight Question

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Question: My show calf weighs 590 lbs he is 6 months old and our county fair is next September. My question is he at the right weight for his age and the time till our fair?

Answer: Steve,

Thank you for contacting the Honor Show Chow Website!

What is your anticipated target weight for this steer?

1,350 lbs (?) to 590 lbs = 760 lbs / 270 days (?) = 2.8 lbs/day average daily gain needed.

Most beef calves are weaned at 190 to 220 days of age and will weigh between 450 to 650 pounds. Considering that information, I would say your calf is right on target.

What breed of steer are you feeding?

I would encourage you to feed him our HSC Fitters Edge and adjust his feed (if needed) later in the feeding phase to achieve your desired look and finish. Please continue to monitor his gain every 30 to 45 days to make sure he is gaining at the proper rate.

Keep up the great work and please let me know if you have any additional
questions!
