Exclusive Interview with Brock May 2011 National Western Stock Show Grand Champion Market Steer

Congratulations to 17-year-old Brock May, from Mineral Point, Wisc., who recently won the Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2011 National Western Stock Show!

Honor Show Chow was lucky enough to have an exclusive interview with Brock, who gave us a little insight on how to win big!

Honor Show Chow:  Hi Brock! We're so excited to hear about your big win.  What breed was the animal?
Brock May:  He was a Chi x Maine x Shorthorn Cross.

HSC:  When did you begin raising him?
BM: We bought my steer last spring in Oklahoma. We brought him home right after that and began to prepare him for the NWSS.

HSC:  Sounds like you had a solid plan in mind.  Can you describe your feeding program?
BM:  We fed him Honor Show Chow Fitter's Edge and Full Control.

HSC:  It looks like that feeding program was successful!  You've won Grand Champion at several other shows, how does this win stand out from the rest?
BM:  This win is truly an honor.  I have been dreaming of winning Grand Champion at the NWSS since I started showing, and I could not be more excited!

HSC:  That is definitely a major accomplishment, and it must feel great to achieve your goals!  We're sure you spent plenty of time with your animal over the past year.  What are some highlights and good memories you have with him?
BM:  The NWSS is definitely my best memory by far!

HSC:  Winning Grand Champion at a national show is no easy feat.  What was the hardest part of raising the steer?
BM:  That would have to be making sure he reached his full market potential.

HSC:  Why do you think your animal was picked to win Grand Champion?  What qualities made him stand out from the rest?
BM:  I think a lot of my success has to do with luck, because anything can go wrong.  Being in the right place at the right time helps.  You just have to be very lucky!

HSC:  Now that you have another major win under your belt, what are your plans for the future?  Do you still see raising/showing cattle as part of your life?
BM:  Right now I attend Mineral Point High School, and I hope to attend Oklahoma State.  I am also hoping to have a career in agriculture afterwards.

HSC:  If you learned one lesson throughout all of your years of showing cattle, what would it be?
BM:  You have to be willing to work really hard, and it takes a lot of time to reach your goals.  Just be ready to put in a lot of work, dedication, and time.

HSC:  It looks like that philosophy worked well for you.  Did you end up selling your animal at the auction?
BM:  I sold him for $50,000, and I plan on using the money towards college.

HSC:  Sounds like a great plan!  Thanks for your time…and for showing us what it takes to be a winner!  We know the future will be looking bright for you!

Honor® Show Chow® will host another VIP event in June of 2011.
